I never had any issues with the bridge or tailpiece. At least try that before replacing the nut. You should notice less slippage after doing this. Pencil lead is graphite and will work as a lubricant. The next time you change strings, take a mechanical pencil and grind some lead into the nut slots. Tuning issues are usually caused by the nut. If you still have the stock tuners, they're Grover Rotomatics and shouldn't have any issues. If you want to keep your budget down, a set of GFS Vintage 59s would do the trick at +/- $75.
Any decent lower output humbucker would sound better. The pickups are OK, but pretty hot and unsuitable for that type of guitar. My main issue was that the bolt-on neck didn't allow you very good fret access past the 15th fret. I bought one new when they were blowing them out for $129 a few years back. What else can I do to make this thing play sound better? all suggestions welcome.

Money's not an obstacle (let's not get too crazy here though) I haven't heavily modded a guitar before, but what do you guys think would help the most? I know I'm probably going to do somehting with the pickups, check out the setup myself to make it play a little better. So I acquired this guitar form a friend some time ago, thought he might want it back but it looks like it's staying now.
